Q: How do I save the music I hear on my home computer?
A: The server isn't meant to let you save files of the music, since much of it is copyrighted music. You may, however, listen to the music any time you'd like using this website and your browser.
Q:
My sound player won't start playing right away. Do I always have to click the play button on the sound player to get it started?
A: That depends on your sound player. You may be able to configure your sound player to begin playing as soon as in loads in the page. For the QuickTime player for example, right click on the speaker icon at the lower left of the player tool bar, then select the "Plugin settings..." option.
Q:
I forgot the password for my class's listening collection? What do I do?
A: You will need to get the password from another classmate or your professor. You can get quick email access to the instructor by clicking on the instructors name in the Listening Collections area on the home page.
Q:
Why do I need a password to get in to my class collection?
A: Many of the sound files on the site are protected by copyright. For academic purposes you can use them, but only a specific group of listeners, so the password prevents everyone on the internet from having access to the material.
Q: Sometimes the music seems to stop working, or sounds choppy and broken up. What is going on?
A: This might happen if your are listening over a slow internet connection, if network traffic is heavy, or if the server is getting many requests for streamed files. Try to make sure your connection is not noisy, especially for phone line connections. Also, try again at a later time to see if things improve.
Q: Why can't hear the music when I click on the speaker icon or the composer's name as I expected?
A: There can be several reasons you are not hearing the music. Check to see that the computer you are using has a sound player pluggin installed. Is the volume turned on? Are you at a library or cluster computer that might not have sound playback capability?
